Offline on-device route planning
Plan hiking and biking routes fully offline, computed on your device. Routing never touches a server — your start, stops and destination stay on the phone.
Before you start
- The region’s routing data must be downloaded. It’s pulled automatically with the region; a region row in Data → Regions shows either “Routing works offline” or “Add offline routing” with its size.
- Routing tiles are shared across regions, so if you already have a neighbouring area’s tiles they’re reused.
Do this
- Tap Plan a route (on the Map tab, or use the Routes tab).
- Set the Start (defaults to My location), optionally Add stop, and the End — tap the map or search for each.
- Pick a Profile: Hiking (trekking), Hiking (mountain), Mountain bike, Gravel bike, Quiet roads, or Road bike.
- Optionally turn on Optimize order to reorder your stops, then tap Plan.
- The confirm sheet shows distance, ascent and an estimated time, with Start and Send to Watch.
Options & toggles
- Send to Watch relays the planned route to a paired Apple Watch for the heading-up compass (see the Watch guide).
- Different profiles favour different surfaces — e.g. Quiet roads avoids busy traffic for cycling, while Gravel bike and Mountain bike prefer tracks and trails.
Good to know
- Routing runs 100% on your device, never on a server. If the routing tiles for an area aren’t downloaded, planning stops with a “Download routing data” button — it does not silently fall back to an online service.
- The estimated time is derived by the app; the routing engine itself carries no duration, so treat the estimate as a rough planning figure.
- This plans a route to anywhere offline. It is not an emergency auto-reroute or a rescue service — carry proper navigation and judgement (see Terms).
If something’s off
- “No route found” offline → the routing tiles for that area haven’t finished downloading; add offline routing for the region while online.
- Route hugs roads you’d rather avoid → switch the profile (e.g. from Road bike to Gravel bike or Quiet roads).
