Light pollution, AR peaks, star overlay & night camera
The dark-sky and camera tools: an approximate light-pollution layer, camera overlays that label peaks and stars, and a manual night long-exposure camera. Most of this lives on the Night tab and in the map overlays.
Do this
- Light pollution — in map settings, turn on the light-pollution overlay. It’s labelled approximate darkness: a VIIRS ground-radiance proxy, not a calibrated Bortle scale.
- AR peak labels — point the camera at the horizon and peaks are named by heading projection (no ARKit needed). The DEM-prominence clutter filter needs the region re-downloaded to pick up prominence data.
- Star / constellation overlay — a camera overlay of the night sky’s stars and constellations.
- Night long-exposure — on the Night tab, set ISO, shutter, bulb and a self-timer, choose a stacking mode (average / sum / lighten), and the app stacks frames into a photo saved to your own photo library.
- Light meter — an on-device light meter, presented with an honest-accuracy caveat.
- Story beams (beta) — opt-in geo-anchored story columns that read aloud on arrival (about 30 m proximity).
Good to know
- The light-pollution layer is a proxy for darkness, useful for finding a darker spot, not a measurement.
- Night photos are stacked on-device and saved to your library — they are never uploaded (see Privacy).
- The camera overlays are pure heading projection (compass + motion), so no ARKit and no network are involved.
